5 Holiday Decorating Tips

Christmas is my favourite holiday of the year— there’s jolly music, great food, and lots of great memories being made with family and friends. Of course, the holidays are going to be a lot different this year but that doesn’t mean we can’t still amp up the holiday spirit in our homes! I’m sharing 5 HOLIDAY DECORATING TIPS to help you add some jolly vibes to your space this year!

1. Switch out textiles (pillows, blankets, dishtowels)

I’ve talked about this before, but switching out textiles is such an easy way to change up the whole mood of a space. During the holidays, I make a point of swapping out my couch pillows covers with more festive options (fun fact: H&M Home has some really affordable and beautiful pillow cover options for any time of the year)!

I also use this time to switch out my blankets from lighter throws to cozier, thick blankets, and I put out holiday-themed dish towels in the kitchen. If you do nothing else, switching out textiles will make it seem like you invested a ton of time into decorating!

2. Garland

I love using all kinds of garland in my apartment! By my windowsill, I place traditional green garland with twinkly lights (a classic christmas look), and I even play around with unique garlands like *this felt one from Indigo that I wrap around my headboard!

Garland is a piece of decor that should be lasting you multiple years, so make a point of investing in good quality versions! For my greenery garland, *I purchase mine from Michaels and they hold up really nicely year to year— I’ve had my current set for four years!

3. Festive Books

Holiday decorating can be as simple as getting creative with things you already own. Your bookshelf is potentially a great place to get some decor— pull out books with red, green, gold, and white colours (or whatever colour combo you’re going for) and stack them together! In seconds you can have a great holiday display for your front entrance or coffee table!

4. Add Picks

Something new I did last year to my Christmas tree was adding picks— picks are essentially sticks with greenery, flowers, feather, etc. I personally love getting picks with berries, pinecones, and snow….it adds so much visual interest to the tree! *You can usually get a good deal on them when they’re on sale and/or using Michael’s weekly coupons!

5. Ceramic Houses

One day I might invest in a Christmas village when I have a bigger home but, until then, I think a really easy and affordable way to get a village vibe is to sprinkle some ceramic houses throughout your space. This year I bought some white ceramic houses from Indigo (which are unfortunately sold out), but you can find similar ones at many retailers. I personally waited to purchase ones with built in lights so that it’d add an extra cozy effect— it’s a bonus if you can find ones with a built-in timer so you don’t manually need to turn them on yourself!

BONUS TIP: I love using smart plugs for my holiday decorating! You can run smart plugs on timers and/or use your voice to turn on all of your christmas decor in seconds.

Have you decorated for the holidays? What’s your favourite room to put together for the holiday season? I personally always have the most fun with the living room because that’s where my Christmas tree lives! Until next time, Xo. —C.
