5 ECO-FRIENDLY items that are worth embracing!
There’s no better time than the present to take steps towards being more eco-friendly! I’ll be the first to admit that my life is far from being waste-free, but over the last couple of years, I’ve slowly been making some swaps that have greatly reduced the amount of waste I put out into the world. Going green doesn’t have to be an overnight switch— like any big change you want to make in life, any progress is progress. Eco-friendly alternatives can often come with a bit of an investment, so I’ve found being committed to making swaps at a comfortable pace has been the most effective method for me (prevents my wallet from crying, and also gives me time to adjust to changes one at a time). Today I’m sharing 5 of my favourite eco-friendly items that I think are worth looking into if you’re wanting to be more environmentally conscious with your lifestyle :)
1) Beeswax Wraps
When I first heard about beeswax wraps, I was unsure how I really felt about them— the concept seemed a bit odd and I couldn’t see them working as effectively as the tried and true plastic wrap. Since then, I’ve been pleasantly surprised to discover that beeswax wraps are amazing! I use them all the time these days to cover lid-less bowls and dishes in my fridge. With a little bit of hand warming, the wraps can be moulded to seal anything and they’re easy to wipe clean. I rarely have a reason to use plastic wrap these days with these in my kitchen.
2) Silicone Bags
Silicone bags have been one of the easiest eco-friendly products to integrate into my life. I have a few from *Stasher that come in beautiful colours and a variety of sizes (I’m actually looking to invest in their large size bags this year). I love these because they seal nicely, can be washed on the top rack of a dishwasher (easy clean-up, wahoo), and are great for storing pre-made smoothie packs in the freezer! I’ve had some of my bags for nearly two years and they still function well and look great.
3) Reusable Shopping Bags
This is a pretty obvious one, but I feel like mentioning it because it’s one of those swaps that can reduce a large amount of single-use waste. When I go grocery shopping, I take an *insulated reusable shopping bag with me and love how it keeps my items cool, while also being strong/large enough to carry all of my groceries home.
Whenever I leave my house, I 98% of the time have a *Baggu on me— Baggu has become my favourite reusable shopping bags for doing everyday errands around the city because they come in a variety of beautiful colours and are large enough to carry a good amount of items. Additionally, they're able to be folded into practically nothing so they can slip into any handbag/pocket without adding weight…I also love that the armholes are big enough to comfortably fit on my shoulder like a tote bag.
4) Reusable Straw
As a coffee lover, I have found myself in the situation of buying an iced coffee on-the-go and being without a reusable straw (oops)! Those situations decreased dramatically when I got this collapsible reusable straw from *Zoku. I love that it folds down so it doesn’t take up much room in my bag, and the metal tip has a piece of silicone that makes the straw more comfortable to drink from than straight metal.
At home, I love to use a variety of silicone, metal, and glass straws…it’s so nice that there are a lots of options on the market these days so you can find the straw that works perfectly for you!
5) Water Filter
Having a jug of filtered water in my fridge has stopped me from ever having to buy plastic water bottles (a big plus for the planet, and an even bigger plus for my back because I don’t have to transport water bottles from the grocery store to my apartment, haha)! The convenience makes this eco-friendly swap a no brainer!
Heading out on-the-go? Grab yourself an aesthetically pleasing water bottle that will make you excited to increase your water intake!
What’s been an eco-friendly product that you swear by? Share in the comments below! This year, I want to make a point of finding more opportunities for minimizing single-use products in my life. As I said in the beginning, I’m not perfect at this— nor do I think I ever will be— but progress doesn’t need to be perfect to be valuable. Little steps add up quickly! I’ll see you soon with a new post! Until then, Xo —C.
